Signage Tips and Advice
We all know that bright flashing signs get people’s attention, but what if we told you that they can do much more than that? The primary goal of a sign is to grab people’s attention. After grabbing their attention it becomes possible to transmit your message to them. In order to do this effectively, the sign should be readable and visually attractive. Read on below for some tips and advice on improving your signage.
Choose Suitable Sign Fonts
How:
Avoid using more than two font styles on a single sign.
Multiple fonts in one sign make it harder to read.
Primary Fonts:
Try to use fonts like Helvetica, Futura or Antique Olive as your main body text. These fonts are easy to distinguish from a distance.
Secondary Fonts:
Try to use Serif fonts such as Goudy, Benguiat, or Times.
Complex Fonts:
- Old English Text
- Engraved
These are almost impossible to read at a distance. Use these fonts when the viewer is will be stationary for a long period of time.
No-No Fonts:
- Comic Sans
- Other similar fonts
Because these fonts appear overly childish, viewers may feel that the business is unprofessional or not very serious. This is not an impression that you want to leave potential customers with.
Use Graphics Appropriately
Remember: Message>Lavish Design
Logos, clip art, boarders, etc. can be a good way to grab a viewers attention. However, they should not be the focal point of the sign nor overpower the intended message. If the viewer is only looking at the cool logo or borders, then the message is lost. Make note of what signs or sign features grab your attention. This can be colour schemes, shapes, words, font, or even design.
Consider Viewing Distance and Viewing Time
“How far away will the viewer be from the sign?”
This is a question that you will need to ask yourself before you choose your lettering. If the sign will be on a business with a large parking lot between the storefront and the street, the letters on the sign will need to be large enough to be viewed by drivers on the street.
*Keep in mind: drivers in motion will only be able to view the sign for 1.5-3 seconds.
The Cchart below will help you choose the correct letter height for the viewing distance.
Use Effective Colour Combinations
The chart below shows some of the most effective colour combinations. Combinations that have a high contrast between the background and the letters are easier to read. They are also easier to view from a larger distance.
* Pink, purple, teal and orange colors are not shown, but can be used for special events, holidays, and parties.
Although these are good general guidelines, they might not always produce desired visual results. Use your own discretion and intuition. Creating attractive and effective signage is essential for a successful business.
